Apr. 13th, 2011

I have to admit, living in a place surrounded by water has its benefits. I even get to work near the water - ideal for me. It makes me calmer.

So, I haven't really seen anyone in ages I'm assuming it's partly my own fault - I know I can be somewhat reclusive. Living in an apartment block, you would think, would change that, but apparently not. So basically, is there anyone around still?

Either way, I'm nearly settled in here - if anyone needs me, I'll probably be near the ocean.

IC Information
Character Full Name: Ashley (Ash) Clarke
Race: Selkie
Age/Birthday: 46. July 5th.
Sexuality: Heterosexual
Occupation: Dock Worker
Relatives: Mother (Eliza Clarke, Selkie, alive), Father (Gordon Clarke, Selkie, deceased), younger sister (Evangeline Clarke, Selkie, alive). His parents, however, were split since he was young.
PB: Gaspard Ulliel.

Abilities and race specifics: Ash is more comfortable around water than he is when he isn’t near it – and as such, living on an island is ideal for him. His specific selkie form is the skin of a seal, and if this skin is stolen (as with all selkies), it would mean serious trouble for Ash – especially if the bearer is female, as it would possibly therefore force him to do her bidding.

However, modern day selkies tend to have their own ways of gaining back these valuable skins - many turning to methods such as bribery. Of course, there are some cases in which this doesn't work, and further action has to be taken - though these cases seem to be rare. In the event that neither works, it is not unheard of for a selkie to take action on themselves rather than be enslaved to humans.

According to mythology, selkies have an affinity to those with broken hearts, and he is drawn to these people – unfortunately this can also include married women whose husbands have gone away. This has caused some serious problems in the past. Selkies themselves were also described as weak to having their hearts broken. However, some modern day selkies tend to be more shrewd with their hearts, and this applies to Ash.

Ash is also very aware of his surroundings, and any sources of water. His reactions are faster than your average human’s, and his range of vision both above and underwater are good.

One noticable sign that selkies are not the same as average humans is their feet - and most selkies tend to be particularly self conscious of allowing anyone to see the webbing between their toes.

Appearance: Ash is lucky enough to be handsome and charming, though there are probably a few members of his race who don't have this luxury. He stands at around 6ft4, and has dark hairy and a cheeky smile, sometimes framed with an amount of stubble. Due to his job, he has a fairly muscular build, though he doesn’t work out beyond his extended ‘swimming’ sessions. Clearly, he does not look his age, as after puberty, the selkie blood prevented him from aging at the normal rate. Ash dresses in whatever looks the best on him, unable to ignore his own nature to look as good as possible.

Personality: Ash has a dark sense of humour, though people tend to miss this, due to the fact that he isn’t necessarily the most social being. He also has a somewhat mean streak, though he isn’t above helping people if he finds them worthy. Of course, this may change once he can be comfortable around people he deems to be ‘like him’. Due to the fate of his sister (who died of a broken heart, all over a human man) he is somewhat suspicious of humans, especially those who try and get close to him. This had lead to loneliness, but he sees this as a safety net at times. Ash is also very close to his sister, and wishes that she too had come to the Haven, though he understands her commitment to her own new family.

Ash has never tried to hide the fact that he is different – the constant moving around meant that he never had to. He’s actually somewhat proud of the fact, and makes sure that he stays close to his watery roots.

In his spare time, Ash enjoys reading, gardening, fishing, and of course, swimming. He enjoys whiskey, and occasionally goes to bars in order to hear the local news – well, it never hurt anyone to stay in touch.

History: Ash really can’t remember a time when his parents were together. It was unusual for two selkies to mate, he knew that much, and their nature meant that they’d never truly be able to commit. After his sister Evangeline was born, they heard little from their father, until one day they heard through the grapevine that he was gone. Permanently. Whilst they didn't have the closest relationship, Ash could tell that his father's death affected his mother deeply, and he wondered if she still looked for him in the ocean sometimes, like she had when he was alive.

Every one of Ash’s childhood homes was on the coast, the call of the salt water too great to ignore. His family kept themselves to themselves, though both of the children did attend public schools and even had friends.

Evangeline, unlike her brother, chose to further a relationship with a human man - something that definitely wasn't unheard of. She ended up marrying the young man in question, and bringing up her own small family with him. Whilst Ash didn't think that relationships with humans were the most sensible idea (humans were too breakable; one had to accept that you would most likely have to watch them die at some point) he supported her, though it meant seeing much less of her than he previously had.

Ash always worked near the water, and considered a career in the Navy, before seeing that this was a bad idea. Working on the docks was one of his better moves, and he found the constant proximity to the ocean somewhat calming, meaning that he could better deal with the humans he was forced to interact with. Of course, over the years, he has got somewhat better with these interactions – time does heal all wounds, after all.

A few years ago now, Ash started to feel the pull to Haven. Of course, he had heard of this place, and though he won’t admit it, he almost felt relieved to have a place like that back again, for people like him. Though he couldn’t convince his mother or sister to come back with him – both preffered the pull of family life – Ash decided that the best thing for him was to make the move. He did this, moving to a modest home near the sea on the island, and that’s where he can be found today.
